Signs of Termite Infestation: How to Spot These Silent Destroyers

Hello there! Greg Lindsey here from Aardvark Exterminating. I’ve been in the pest control business for over 20 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that termites don’t announce themselves with a knock on the door. These silent destroyers can be munching away at your home for months or even years before you notice anything wrong.

That’s why I wanted to share some simple signs to watch for that might mean you’ve got unwanted guests. Think of this as your neighbor stopping by for a friendly chat about keeping your home safe.

Wood Damage That Doesn’t Make Sense

One of the first things you might notice is wood that just doesn’t look right. Tap on your baseboards or wooden beams with a screwdriver handle. If it sounds hollow or the wood crumbles easily, that’s not normal aging – that’s termites having a feast at your expense.

I remember visiting Mrs. Johnson over on Oak Street last spring. She thought her window frame was just getting old, but when I tapped on it, the whole thing nearly fell apart! Those termites had been having dinner parties in there for months.

Those Mysterious Mud Tubes

Termites are clever little critters. They build these pencil-width mud tunnels to travel between their nest and their food source (which unfortunately is your home). Keep an eye out for these tubes along your foundation, in crawl spaces, or even running up walls.

These mud highways protect termites from drying out while they commute back and forth. If you spot one, break off a small section. If it gets repaired in a day or two, you’ve got active termites that need addressing right away.

Flying Termites and Discarded Wings

In spring, you might notice what looks like flying ants around your porch light or windows. Look closer! These could actually be termite swarmers – the reproductives looking to start new colonies.

After they fly around for a bit, they shed their wings. Finding small piles of what looks like fish scales (usually near windowsills) is a dead giveaway that termites have decided your neighborhood looks like prime real estate.

That Musty, Earthy Smell

Sometimes you can actually smell a termite problem before you see it. If there’s a musty, damp odor in your home that reminds you of fresh soil after rain – especially if you can’t figure out where it’s coming from – that could be termites.

Last summer, Mrs. Williams called me because her living room had developed this strange earthy smell. She’d cleaned everything top to bottom but couldn’t get rid of it. Sure enough, we found a massive termite colony behind her walls.

Tight-Fitting Doors and Windows

This one surprises a lot of folks. If your doors or windows suddenly start sticking or getting hard to open, it might not be the humidity. Termites produce moisture when they eat and nest, which can warp wood frames.

What To Do If You Spot These Signs

If any of these signs are ringing alarm bells for you, don’t panic – but don’t ignore them either. Here at Aardvark Exterminating, we’ve been helping Athens homeowners deal with termites since 1995. We’ve seen it all, and we’re just a phone call away.

Remember, the cost of treating a small termite problem today is a whole lot less than repairing structural damage tomorrow. We offer free inspections, so you’ve got nothing to lose by giving us a call at (706) 353-7073.

And if you’re wondering whether to buy a home with a history of termite problems, definitely get it checked out first. Not all termite treatments are created equal, and we can tell you whether the previous work was done right.

Stay vigilant, my friends! Your home is your biggest investment, and we’re here to help you protect it.
